Fort Prinzenstein is a historic fort built by Danish traders in 1784. It was part of the transatlantic slave trade network and served as a prison for slaves awaiting transportation to the Caribbean until around 1803. It also facilitated trade in goods like gold, ivory, and textiles in exchange for muskets and other items. In 1850, Britain took over the fort along with other Danish holdings in the Gold Coast. The fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction despite damage from coastal erosion and storms.
