Black Star Square, also called Independence Square, is one of Ghana’s most important national landmarks. Built in 1961 under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, it stands as a symbol of freedom and unity, marking Ghana’s independence. The square features three iconic monuments: the Independence Arch, the Liberation Day Monument, and the Black Star Gate, which bears the words “Freedom and Justice.” With seating for up to 30,000 people, the square is the official venue for Ghana’s Independence Day Parade held every March 6, as well as state funerals, national festivals, concerts, and other major events. Visitors often stop by during the day to admire the architecture, take photos, and reflect on Ghana’s journey to independence. Although Black Star Square does not have official social media pages, it is one of the most photographed and shared sites in Ghana, often featured in cultural celebrations and campaigns. Open to the public, it remains both a historic and living space, connecting Ghana’s past to its present.
