Abandze, a coastal town in Ghana's Central Region, holds significant cultural and historical importance, particularly due to its association with the transatlantic slave trade and the Fante people's heritage. Perched on a hill in Abandze, Fort Amsterdam is a notable historical site. Originally constructed by the British between 1638 and 1645, it was known as Fort Cormantin. The fort changed hands multiple times, with the Dutch capturing it in 1665 and renaming it Fort Amsterdam. It served various roles, including as a trading post and a base during the colonial era. After Ghana's independence in 1957, the fort was used briefly as a military training center before falling into disrepair. Restoration efforts have since been made to preserve it as a historical monument.
